4 ways for single women to survive Valentine's Day

Who says you have to be miserable this Valentine's Day?
Let your friends consume all the heart-shaped candies or shower the love of their lives with extravagant gifts. You certainly do not have to feel pressured to find someone special, let alone settle down with the next man to walk past your way.

People tend to forget that Valentine's Day is simply an opportunity to connect with people we care about - and to take a moment to appreciate them.

Here are four simple ways to capture the spirit of Valentine's Day.
1) Reconnect with a good friend, real time
Technology can certainly be used for greater good but sometimes it can be our biggest foe. With impossible schedules to juggle, many of us tend to fall out of touch with people we care about.

Instead of catching up on Facebook or sending a smiley face over text and Twitter, carving the time to meet them in person has a far greater benefit than meeting them online, hands down.

You can share a good laugh, catch up on each other's lives and tell them how much you miss them.

You can certainly hug your friends and in return, be hugged back. We engage our five senses when we're physically present with our friends, plus the level of cortisol - a stress hormone, decreases drastically making us less stressed and happier as a result.

2) Get Over an Ex
If staying at home makes you feel miserable because it'll cause you to reminisce about a lost love, then go get some company.

Instead of idealizing an ex, this Valentine's Day write out all of the reasons that that person was not a match and did not bring out the best in you. If you can't remember, enrol a good friend or family member to help you make the list!

Sometimes when you stop romanticizing a relationship that did not work out, you can feel the weight lifted off your shoulders.

3) Make Love a Priority
This is where most singles tend to falter. While many "claim" that having a relationship is a priority for them, they are not setting aside the time, effort and commitment to make it a priority.

How will they have time for a relationship if they don't even have time to date?

If finding a mate is a priority, consider: What do you have to say 'no' to, to say 'yes' to your goal of finding a relationship? You may have to say 'no' to working past midnight every day or the perspective that it's not worth the time and effort to get out there again.

If you want to be in a relationship, clear time and space in your schedule to make love a priority. Having the intention is not good enough... having a plan, is.

4) Love YOUR life
You can be single and loving it or you can be a couple and hating it.

So, the best thing you can do for your love life is to love your life! For one thing, you are more likely to attract people since there's nothing sexier than someone who is passionate and engaged in life.

More importantly, your life will be more fun and meaningful if you focus on outlets that bring you pleasure.

Reconnect with your passions and indulge in activities that make you happy.

Take that driving lesson, or get PADI certified for your scuba dive. Think about what you would be doing if time and money weren't an issue, and incorporate some of those activities into your everyday life.

Don't wait for someone else to make you happy before you get happy yourself. Time to completely disregard the infamous Jerry McGuire phrase, because "You complete you!"

14 Feburary, 2010 will not only be Valentine's Day, it is also the first 15 days of chinese Lunar New year as well as Ms Valentine's birthday.

To commerate and make the day even more special for her, she has gone to citizen journalism website, STOMP, to appeal for a date.

In her email to STOMP, she said "I am Valentine, 25, and I will be turning 25 on 14th February 2010, which is Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year and also my birthday.

"I was wondering whether STOMP can make my birthday wish come true.

"I would like to have a memorable 25th birthday to remember and it's not often 3 situations can occur on a single day (birthday, Valentine's Day plus Chinese New Year), therefore I would like to have an opportunity to have a smashing birthday.

"Can you find me my Valentine?"

The Primary school supervisor associates herself to being "a book that you can enjoy with a cup of coffee with. You will discover the beauty and goodness in the book when you take time to ponder and read it thoroughly."

Though she's not stunning, she had a friendly and kind smile.

However, netizens' responses were far from kind. Out of the 70 people who polled, 62 said "no" to dating her. Most critised that she was simply not pretty.

Shin Min daily reported that one netizen went further and commented that if she wants a date, she'll have to pay for the meal as well as send the guy home before any consideration.

On the other hand, a minority felt that although she was brave to have sought for love, but it was self-degrading.

Psychiatrist's Opinion
In an interview with Shin Min, Dr Hong Yong Yuen said there are 2 possible motivations behind her actions.

Firstly, she's mature and confident. She would have expected such a backlash but she's unfazed by it.

Or she's immature and lacks confidence. All this may be pure fun to her and gives her attention wanted.

The vicious comments will strip away her battered confidence.

On the netizens' reaction, he feels that they ought to reflect on their own morals and values. The doctor said if they did not like what she was doing, they could simply look away instead of attacking her furiously.

PHOTO: The vicious comments will strip away her battered confidence. She will be reminded of the cruel saying that toad should only observe the Single Awareness Day - S.A.D.
The practical world values beauty and toad should stay where they comfortably belong, the rubbish dump.
Very heartening to know but such thought exists in 62 out of 70.

Love and Infatuation - The Test of Time

Some of my colleagues and ex-colleagues are getting married by end of this year or the start of next year. The least we could do is to give the couples our best wishes, after seeing them making so much efforts to register, plan and organize their weeding.

For those of us who have being unable or unsuccessful in doing so could be surprise at how fast and easily others can walk down the aisle together. This does not mean that all couples have not gone through the trying period of courtship and carefully make the final lifelong decision.

Most often than not, there could be many interesting, exciting and painful stories left behind before their historical announcement. It is just that we are too engrossed with our own affairs to know about their efforts and hardships.

Every marriage is make in heaven and should be treasured.

For those with hopeless chances and are invited to celebrate others' happiness (with cost) in this very difficult times is an opportunity for character building. The haunting "failures" are back in full force, to torment mercilessly and with the cruel motive to embarrass.

Similarly, the organizers are too engrossed with their own activities to realize the extreme feeling of those trying to escape such events. There is always somebody wanting to achieve personal satisfaction at the expense of others.

Picture is obtained from http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/guilu67/guilu670806/guilu67080600077/3218719.jpg

Those in the group of "Successful" will immediately scoff at those unfortunate enough to be at the receiving end. Unkind words like "Stupid", "Unsporting", "Self-centered" and "Unsociable" will be used to attack the already injured.

This is often executed with an air of the mighty and holy beings. Because they are "Successful" in this area and therefore entitled to this privilege. The "failures" must be publicly disgraced until beyond any doubt. There is no stopping unless the victim is totally red with embarrassment and left skimping in their seat for the rest of the endless time.

Some of the following chinese saying are relevant to the topic.
山水有相逢
- Will eventually meet one another

shān shuǐ yǒu xiāng féng

你情我愿
- Both agree Willingly

nǐ qíng wǒ yuàn

伤心失意
- Sad and dejected

shāng xīn shī yi

头昏脑胀
- The head is reeling, spinning

tóu hūn nǎo zhànɡ

喜山眉梢
- Looks very happy, eyes twinkle with pleasure

xǐ shān méi shāo

心神恍惚
- Distrait, Distracted

xīn shén huǎng hū

THE TEST OF TIME
If you want to know whether or not you’re really in love, give it the test of time.

Infatuation is the name we give to that first bright burst of attraction between two people. It sets our pulses racing and makes us think of clouds and fireworks, as well as stories that end in “happily ever after”.

There’s no doubt infatuation looks and feels very much like love; the only problem is, it doesn’t last. It’s a quick, emotional high, with no commitment behind it. And when it runs its course, we find ourselves back where we started, with little or nothing to show for the experience.

How then can we distinguish real love from temporary attraction? If the feeling is reliable, how can we measure the commitment of the will? There’s only one answer: It takes time.

The best advice I can offer a couple contemplating marriage, or any other important issue, is make no important life shaping decisions quickly or impulsively.

Measure your motivation carefully, and when in doubt, stall for time. Give your emotions a chance to evolve and oscillate. If your love is real, it can handle the wait, and your relationship will be stronger for the seasoning of an unhurried foundation.
