There are many differences between a front loading and top loading washing machine. Most people still have the traditional top loading machine. They are less expensive than front loading machines, though in the end, top loaders may cost you more money in energy and water costs. There are trade offs with each type of washing machine, and plenty of things to consider if you’re planning on purchasing a new machine.

A top loading washing machine is most familiar to people, though they may have seen front loading machines in laundromats or increasingly in appliance stores. These machines use an agitator which spins the soapy clothes to help get out dirt. The washer drains, adds more water to rinse and then spins the clothes to wring out excess water. Clothes are placed into the spinning basket via the top of the machine, and you can open the machine at any time to add something else.

This 6-kg top loading fully automatic washing machine with agitator wash has 8 preset programmes. It allows prewash (soak), hot water wash, heavy wash, normal wash, quick wash and delicate wash. Additional features are washload sensor, automatic drainage, auto restart and child lock. It has a stainwash programme with limited ability to remove stains. The stainless steel drum facilities hot wash by externally adding hot water. What's more, it sets optimum water and detergent levels according to the wash load and wash programme selected to give you the best wash performance.

A front loading washing machine uses less energy and does not have an agitator. A front loading machine is a gentler method, because it uses gravity to spin the clothes, which helps save energy and may extend life of clothing. These machines use less water and detergent, which may be a great savings on water costs, and they can usually be filled with more clothes. You cannot open these machines while they are running, so your days of adding a forgotten sock to a batch being washed are over if you choose a front loading washing machine.

PHOTO: Xeros - The ‘one-cup water’ washing machine concept
Professor Stephen Burkinshaw has invented a washing machine, dubbed Xeros that will wash a full load of your clothes using just a single cup of water. This magical washing machine uses plastic chips to do the cleaning job. These plastic chips are 0.5 centimeter in size and around 44lb (20kilos) of these go into each load. When the washing cycle commences, the water gets heated up and dissolves the dirt, which is then absorbed by the plastic chips. The plastic chips are re-usable and can be used up to 100 times.

http://www.thedesignblog.org/entry/best-designs-of-the-year-2008/

Front loaders vary in size but many can take up less space than top loaders. It’s often possible to stack a dryer on top of a front loading machine, but you will usually only find this feature in top loaders that are very small and won’t accommodate large batches. A front loader may be a better choice if you need to save on space but still want a fairly good sized washing machine

There is nevertheless some advantage to the top loading washing machine if you have back, knee or neck problems. It can be awkward to bend down to load and unload clothes, but usually no more so than using front loading dryers. If you have to do lots of laundry, you may prefer a front loader to avoid frequent bending to get clothes in and out of a machine.

You do give up greater efficiency, savings in energy and water costs, use of less water, and potentially longer life of clothing when you use a top loading washing machine. However you also may benefit in the short run because they are significantly less expensive. For people who can afford the front loader and who don’t have issues with the way clothes are loaded, this may be your best bet. In some states and countries you may even qualify for an energy rebate if you purchase a front loading machine.

When you compare washing machine prices, also think about things like warranties from the company and service options from the place where you bought it. Some stores, both larger and even independent, can give you seemingly great prices but won't be able to help when things go wrong. When my parents bought new machines nearly ten years ago now, they went to the local appliance store, and for several years could get it fixed easily anytime it broke. The store is sadly now closed, which is unfortunate because it gave such great service.

As with most appliances, "cheap" washing machines will turn out to be just that- cheap. Top loaders are admittedly often larger, but that is their main advantage. However, either choice can be a poor one if you end up with a machine that will not last; while something cheap is tempting, reading reviews and looking at several different models would be a good idea to prevent the need to replace the machine after only a few years.

A SOTHEBY’ employee displays a rare automaton caterpillar, probably made by Henri Maillardet in 1820, during an auction press preview in Geneva, Switzerland.

Six automaton caterpillars by Maillardet are known to exist and only two of the six are studded with diamond, emeralds, rubies, and turquoise - this being one of them.

From late 18th century to early 19th century, automaton was all the rage in Europe. Renowned watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz and his son Jean-Frederic Leschot built many mechanical birds and dolls.

Maillardet spent a period of time working in Jaquet-Droz’s shop in London. His rare caterpillar will be offered on auction on Nov 16, with a pre-sale estimate of up to CHF450,000 (S$596,587).

There are days when you just did not get enough rest the night before, and you come in to work feeling sluggish, out of sorts, and in sore need of an energy boost.

It might be because you helped your kids out with their school projects, an anniversary date with your spouse, or a solid night of partying with the guys. It might even be because you burned the midnight oil to meet a deadline at work.

One thing's for sure. After nights like these, your body will find a way to recover, whether you like it or not. Some choose to do it artificially - with drinks like coffee, soda, or energy drinks. Others choose to do it the natural way, and try to sleep it off.

If you don't have a rest area at work - and let's face it, most don't - here are some discreet sleeping positions that you can try to catch a few zzz's discreetly.

Eight sleeping positions you can try

While this article does not advocate sleeping on the job, studies have shown that a quick power nap can actually make you more productive.

According to the Siesta Awareness group, a 10-20 minute nap in the middle of a working day can make you more productive by over 30 per cent. It also says that according to NASA, that snooze can improve your memory and concentration, as well as a hundred per cent increase of alertness.

Research by the Salk Institute for Biological Studies shows that brain activity remains high in those who take naps in the afternoon, but declines for those who don't. In fact, studies have also shown that power naps will benefit not only those who didn't get enough rest the night before, but basically everyone, as our natural body rhythms naturally plunge at about three in the afternoon. Sounds familiar? This, related to the other findings above, suggests that a quick catnap might be the boost you need to help you get through the rest of the day.

If you do decide to take your afternoon siesta at work, you are not alone.

In a 1993 interview with Dan Rather, then-US President Bill Clinton said: "If I can take a nap, even 15 or 20 minutes in the middle of the day, it is really invigorating to me. On the days when I'm a little short of sleep, I try to work it out so that I can sneak off and just lie down for 15 minutes, a half an hour, and it really makes all the difference in the world."

Other famous nappers include former UK Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill, former US presidents John F Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Johannes Brahms, Beethoven, and Benjamin Franklin. And we must not forget the Spanish, who to this day, still traditionally go for their post-lunch siesta.

So if you must take that power nap to rest, recharge, and rejuvenate, research shows it's better that you do.

Just don't sleep until you clock out and leave the office.

At German Airports, Bees Help Monitor Air Quality

WeekendToday, Saturday, October 2, 2010, Page 10 (The New York Times)
PHOTO: Walter Klumpp, a beekeeper for 30 years and chairman of the local beekeepers club, is in charge of the Düsseldorf airport bees. (Andreas Wiese/Düsseldorf International Airport) WeekendToday, Saturday, October 2, 2010, Page 10 (The New York Times)

Airports in Germany have come up with an unusual approach to monitoring air quality. The Düsseldorf International Airport and seven other airports are using bees as “biodetectives,” their honey regularly tested for toxins.

Air quality at and around the airport is excellent,” said Peter Nengelken, the airport’s community liaison. The first batch of this year’s harvested honey from some 200,000 bees was tested in early June, he said, and indicated that toxins were far below official limits, consistent with results since 2006 when the airport began working with bees.

Beekeepers from the local neighborhood club keep the bees. The honey, “Düsseldorf Natural,” is bottled and given away as gifts.

Biomonitoring, or the use of living organisms to test environmental health, does not replace traditional monitoring, said Martin Bunkowski, an environmental engineer for the Association of German Airports. But “it’s a very clear message for the public because it is easy to understand,” he added.

Volker Liebig, a chemist for Orga Lab, who analyzes honey samples twice a year for the Düsseldorf and six other German airports, said results showed the absence of substances that the lab tested for, like certain hydrocarbons and heavy metals, and the honeywas comparable to honey produced in areas without any industrial activity.” A much larger data sampling over more time is needed for a definitive conclusion, he said, but preliminary results are promising.

Could bees be modern-day sentinels like the canaries once used as warning signals of toxic gases in coal mines?

PHOTO: Honey harvested from bees at Düsseldorf International Airport in Germany shows low levels of toxins.
WeekendToday, Saturday, October 2, 2010, Page 10 (The New York Times)

Assessing environmental health using bees as “terrestrial bioindicators“ is a fairly new undertaking, said Jamie Ellis, assistant professor of entomology at the Honey Bee Research and Extension Laboratory, University of Florida in Gainesville. “We all believe it can be done, but translating the results into real-world solutions or answers may be a little premature.” Still, similar work with insects to gauge water quality has long been successful.

Many experts say aircraft are not the only, or even main, source of pollution at airports. Cars, taxis, buses and ground activities as well as local industry are often major polluters.

Not surprisingly, Nancy Young, vice president of environmental affairs at the Air Transport Association of America, an airline trade group, defended the air quality at airports. “Airports are not significant contributorsto local air pollution, she said, adding that aviation emissions represent “less than 1 percent of the nation’s inventory and typically only a few percentage points in any given metropolitan area with a major airport.” She said the United States had improved the air quality at its airports through more stringent standards and improved monitoring techniques.

Internationally, there have been similar improvements, said Steven Lott, a spokesman for the International Air Transport Association. Since the 1960s, carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, smoke and nitrogen-oxide emissions have been substantially reduced, he said. Standards for most of them are set by the International Civil Aviation Organization, a United Nations body.

It’s a challenge for an industry that continues to grow,” Mr. Lott said. But the industry has invested in developing cleaner aircraft engines and ground-support equipment and vehicles as well as improvements in how equipment is operated. Initiatives like its Green Teams, for example, allow industry consultants to visit airlines to identify and share ways to reduce fuel burn and emissions. More than 105 airlines have participated, he said.

Still, some community groups are not persuaded that air quality at airports has improved.

It’s way worse than people think,” said Debi Wagner, a board member of Citizens Aviation Watch USA, who lives in Seattle. Some emissions are not adequately sampled and measured, Ms. Wagner said, and other potentially dangerous ones are not monitored at all. She said she was concerned particularly about the health of people living within three miles of commercial airports.

Two recent studies also raise questions about the quality of air at airports. Both focus on small general aviation airports, like the one in Santa Monica, Calif., which was studied in both reports.

The traditional pollutants did not seem to be a local issue,” said Philip Fine, atmospheric measurements manager for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, an air quality regulatory agency for most of Southern California. “However, there were issues for ultrafine particles and lead.

Dr. Fine, who oversees a network of air-monitoring stations, was a lead researcher on a study financed by the Environmental Protection Agency that is to be released in the next few weeks.

The lead levels from non-jet aircraft emissions did not exceed federal limits, but were significantly elevated, Dr. Fine said. Elevated levels of ultrafine particles, primarily from jet aircraft, were also a concern. The particles are short-lived, but because they are in high concentration down wind during takeoff, they are particularly worrisome for people who live close to small airports or who are repeatedly exposed, he said.

Most large airports are farther from residential communities, and also have buffer zones separating them.

The health implications of ultrafine particles are not yet known, but some medical research suggests they could pose a serious risk because the extremely fine particles pass through cell walls easily and are able to penetrate far into the brain and circulatory system.

Epidemiological studies have shown there are health risks from elevated levels of these particles emitted by cars and trucks, a concern for people who live near or frequently travel on busy highways, said Suzanne E. Paulson, professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles. But “we know next to nothing about the health effects of aircraft emissions” of these particles, Dr. Paulson said. She was a lead researcher on another study, published late last year in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

The federal government sets standards for pollutants like ozone and particulate matter, Dr. Fine said, “but ultrafine particles are not currently regulated.

Europe has limits on ultrafine particles from vehicle emissions, Dr. Fine said. But Emanuel Fleuti, head of environment services for Zurich Airport, said there were concerns in Europe as well. Meanwhile, he said, he is confident about the biomonitoring work the German airports are doing with bees, as the results are consistent with traditional air quality monitoring in Europe.

If you look at the honey, it’s perfectly fine,” Mr. Fleuti said, adding that he often gets jars of it when he visits Germany. “It’s good honey.

NEW FLASH SYSTEM
SOURCE: PATENTLY APPLE

MY PAPER, MONDAY SEPTEMBER 27, 2010, PAGE A9

APPLE is designing an advanced camera flash system that is said to optimise the lighting on the subject, according to a patent application filed by the tech giant.

The filing was related to flash re-directors and new imaging sensors, LA News Monitor reported, quoting technology blog Patently Apple.

According to the patent, the company could integrate the system into a wide variety of Apple products, including its iMac desktop and MacBook laptops.

The company is also planning to use the system in devices based on its iOS operating system and in Apple cameras as well, said LA News Monitor.

This latest move suggests that Apple wants a bigger piece of the imaging business, after having improved the imaging capabilities of its devices, including the iPhone 4 and the iPod touch, according to CNet.

Patently Apple revealed that the flash re-directors would work by selectively illuminating certain areas of a scene with an array of flash lights that point at different directions.

According to the filing, as reported by Patently Apple, the camera flash system will not provide blanket lighting for the whole photograph. It will, however, allow for a lens that redirects a fixed light source, or multiple flashes, said LA News Monitor.

The light source can either be automatically aimed at the place where it is needed or the photographer can control it.

This means that the camera could detect where the subject is and turn on the nearest flash accordingly for a picture with better illumination, reported CNet.

LA News Monitor said that Apple has improved the photographic capabilities of its hugely successful smartphone – the iPhone range – by releasing the iOS 4.1 software update.

The update added high dynamic range, which takes several versions of the same photograph automatically. It also tweaks the exposure for each one automatically, said LA News Monitor.

The technology will then combine the photographs into a single image with near-perfect colour tone and balance.

Anaglyphs
You can generate several different types of color and black-and-white Anaglyphs:

Red Cyan Full Color
Default mode that takes the Red component from the Left image, and the Cyan component from the Right Image

Red Cyan Tweaked Color
Similar to above, but with primary colors (R, G, B) desaturated to reduce retinal rilvalry.

Red Cyan Graysale Red
The left channel is converted to Grayscale using the NTSC YUV colorspace and mapped to the red channel. This makes an easier-to-see 3D image, at the expense of color fidelity.

Red Cyan Black White
Both Left and Right are converted to Grayscale. This makes an easy-to-see 3D image, but with no color information.

Green Magenta Full Color
Uses Green/Magenta instead of Red/Cyan. For LCD projectors viewed with polarized glasses on a sliver screen

Magenta Green Full Color
Uses Magenta/Green instead of Red/Cyan, as above
